The video streaming giant, Netflix has been reportedly considering expanding their business into the video games market similar to that of Apple’s Apple Arcade. Asiaone learned that the company has been looking to hire an executive this particular expansion into the most unlikely industry no one ever saw coming.
That said, they are obviously stepping up their game (no pun intended) and increasing their efforts to be recognized beyond your regular video entertainment platform. Just like Apple Arcade, Netflix is planning to release games through bundle subscriptions.
According to an interview with Polygon, members of their streaming platform have already responded very positively to some of their interactive content like Bandersnatch and You v. Wild. If you didn’t know, their 2018’s Black Mirror: Bandersnatch was one of the first interactive video-game-inspired content to have made it on the platform.
In 2020, interactive episodes of Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt were also made available on Netflix. Additionally, there are various other quality contents based on their existing exclusive IPs. Netflix also started producing series based on popular video game franchises such as DOTA, Castlevania, and League of Legends.
Expanding to a bigger platform that caters to people who love experiencing unlimited and various entertainment will get to enjoy a unique and immersive entertainment the world is yet to see.
What is Apple Arcade?
For those who don’t know what an Apple Arcade is, it is a video game subscription service where games are free of any forms of advertisements and in-app purchases unlike mobile games you’ll typically find on the App Store. The games also feature Always-on DRM which is basically enabling players to play these games offline and without interruptions.
The service also integrates Apple’s other existing services such as Game Center and iCloud for a more seamless gaming experience. This means that social features like scoreboards, achievements, and leaderboards can be shared and publicly made available if you wish.
The Apple Arcade subscription costs around five dollars a month or around 50 dollars for a whole year of service. The service’s main selling point is that subscription services are way better than actually having to purchase a single game with an expensive price tag.
If you are wondering whether Apple Arcade is a success, the truth is, no one really knows for sure. However, many experts believe that by 2024, the total number of subscribers is expected to reach 10% of Apple’s overall consumer base and would generate more than 4 billion and a half dollars in profit.
Not bad considering that Apple only spent five hundred million dollars to launch this game subscription service.
What does this mean for Netflix?
If Netflix wants something similar to Apple Arcade, that could only mean that they are making a good decision of adopting business strategies of expanding one’s reach. The video streaming company certainly has the budget to make this into a reality and execution has always been their field of expertise, too.
While this would be Netflix’s first actual venture into the video games industry, everyone is certainly excited about what kinds of games would they be able to offer people of different tastes. Who knows, maybe we’d finally be getting casino royale games straight from our living rooms!
As of now, there are still lots of questions than answers as we are only left with very limited details regarding this unexpected announcement. If you may recall, Netflix even mentioned that they consider Epic Games’ Fortnite (their popular battle royale game) as their biggest competitor in 2019.
