There was a vulnerability found in the Qualcomm Chips that powers the Qualcomm Mobile Station Modem Interface. The system is the one responsible for the communication between all the software components and all the other extra subsystems.
The flaw in the Qualcomm Chips
This flaw allows mobile hackers to remotely target any Android users through malicious codes. These codes can be injected and have the hackers gain access to users’ text messages, call logs, and even eavesdrop during phone calls.
It is believed that hackers can hide within the modem chip and make itself incognito. This way, it can never be detected even by current security measures that modern phones have today. The bug was officially called the CVE-2020-11292.
Other than that, no further technical details have been shared. Qualcomm has already notified all the Android vendors and stated that patches are on their way. Albeit the rollout and implementation of these fixes may take time to fully execute.
This isn’t the first time for Qualcomm to have had flaws before. In the past, six serious bugs in Qualcomm’s Snapdragon line of mobile chipset were discovered. As a matter of fact, over 40 percent of Android phone users are affected by cyber-attacks.
Who and what is at risk here?
From what we’ve learned about the Qualcomm Chip so far, anyone with Android-operated phones with the likes of Google Pixel phones, Samsung’s line of Galaxy devices, LG models, OnePlus units, and Xiaomi phones were affected. In other words, most Android users are at risk here.
The QMI or the interface that the Qualcomm modem uses has been around since the 2G era of mobile internet. What is shocking is the fact that even to this day, vulnerabilities and flaws are still discovered. And right now, the new bug could definitely be devastating.
Qualcomm supports tons of modern connections such as 4G, LTE, as well as the latest 5G network connectivity. The chips are built to provide phone makers the ability to customize the chips to perform additional tasks such as recording and unlocking the phone. That said, the bug can clearly enable hackers to gain access to these features, too.
Android users who can no longer receive any system updates like those with older phone models are out of luck. Their best option is to get an entirely new phone and not get their privacy and safety put at risk. Privacy, no matter how you look at it, should always be one of your highest priorities. Even the casino Singapore industry understands this.
Tech companies who make Android phones are committed to creating all the necessary patches to prevent further damages with plenty of timely system updates.
Keeping yourself safe
Now that we have learned a thing or two about the vulnerabilities we are facing here, it’s always a great idea to take a few extra steps on your end and prevent any malicious attacks from infiltrating your privacy. Here are some best practices when it comes to securing your mobile phones.
Always make sure that your device is always updated to the very latest version of the Android operating system. By not doing so, you risk your device from many potential exploitations, cyber-attacks, and other vulnerabilities that can happen without you even realizing it.
Apart from making sure that you are using the latest software version of your phone’s OS, you may also want to ensure that you make the update through official means. Additionally, you may want to get rid of any phone applications that did not come from the official app stores of your phone.
That said, never run nor install any apps that are not from the official app store. The probability of these apps having bugs and malware is highly likely. Lastly, if you can, try to install a security app like a malware tracker on your mobile device.
