It is quite rare for a popular MOBA game to be adapted to an animated series, let alone a Netflix original. The captivating world of video games finally bled into the world of animated series. It is only a matter of time before a live-action series or a feature film will be made adapted from a MOBA game, after all, Warcraft is a success.

Anime adaptation

DOTA: Dragon’s Blood is an epic fantasy series that is adapted from Dota 2 which is the sequel to the Valve MOBA video game DoTA. The series was co-produced by Studio Mirr with Kaiju Boulevard and Ashley Miller served as an executive producer. The series was directed by the duo Park So Young and Kim Eeui Jeong.
The series premiered on the streaming platform Netflix on March 25, 2021, and it is composed of 8 episodes each with a running time of 28 minutes. The series features a hybrid of traditional Japanese anime with American-style animated series.

The main protagonist was voiced by Yuri Lowenthal who also voiced Uchiha Sasuke in Naruto and Ben Tennyson in Ben10. The female lead was voiced by Lara Pulver known for Irene in BBC’s TV series Sherlock opposite Benedict Cumberbatch.

Premise

The series followed a young Dragon Knight named Davion on his quest to save the world from an evil entity called Terrorblade. Davion has enmity with dragons because it is the cause of his family’s demise. Davion also encountered a princess named Mirana and a feisty dragon called Slyrak.

DOTA: Dragon’s Blood landed on the Top 10 Most-Watched Shows on Netflix from March 26 to March 28, 2021. The series also became number 1 in the following countries: Serbia, Ukraine, Bolivia, Bulgaria, Russia, Peru, and the Philippines. While it yielded number 2 nad 3 in the following countries: Vietnam, Thailand, and Malaysia.

The show also rated 8.5/10 on IMDB, a ranking platform with its 5,000 reviews. The series was a successful venture and it attracted viewers on Netflix as well as the fans of the MOBA game. The success of the series creates a discussion among fans to hope for Netflix to adapt other MOBA games as well.
